The most important distinction is the one in the title: AI-assisted studying, not AI-replaced studying. The difference determines whether you are using these tools to become more capable or to simulate capability you have not developed.
Learning happens in your brain. It requires engagement, struggle, retrieval practice, and sleep. AI can make each of those more efficient. It cannot substitute for any of them. A student who uses AI to avoid the struggle of learning a difficult concept has not learned the concept — they have produced a document about the concept they do not understand.

One of the most genuinely valuable uses of AI in academic study is concept explanation. When a lecture is unclear, when a textbook passage does not connect, when you have read the same paragraph four times — an AI can provide an alternative explanation in different language, at whatever level of detail you need.
The key is specificity. "Explain thermodynamics" produces a generic overview. "I understand entropy measures disorder, but I don't understand why entropy always increases in a closed system" produces a response targeted to your gap.
After an AI explains a concept, close the chat and try to explain the concept yourself, out loud or on paper, without looking. If you can, you've understood it. If you can't, you've read an explanation without understanding it — which is different. Go back and identify specifically what you cannot reconstruct, and ask about that.
Research on learning is unusually consistent on one point: retrieval practice — the act of trying to recall information from memory — is far more effective for long-term retention than re-reading or passive review. Students who use practice testing as their primary study method consistently outperform students who re-read notes, even when the test-takers spend less total time studying.
AI is excellent for generating practice questions. Give it your notes, ask for a mix of factual, conceptual, and application questions, then close the chat and answer from memory. The struggle to retrieve — even when you can't retrieve perfectly — is what drives retention.
Sleep is not a reward for finishing your studying. It is a required component of the learning process. Memory consolidation happens primarily during sleep. Pulling an all-nighter before an exam is not studying; it is substituting exhaustion for rest and hoping it works. It reliably does not.
